ROBOCOP:

US and Uk Film Comparison: Intro:

It was with a great deal of hard work, hours on the internet, revising, revising the page some more, and having dully realised the reality that I had been reading the same sentence over and over again- but finally the day is here. The day that I share to you, dear reader, the two films that will be close to my heart for the remainder of the year as I scavenge all the information on these two films so as in the hope to aid me in my A-Level Media Studies.

Ladies and Gentlemen I give you my international film...

ROBOCOP: (Produced by MGM):

 The Posters:

ROBOCOP (Poster 1):

we are given an instant view of ROBOCOP himself as we are given a close mid shot of the main character. with the plain whit backdrop that is full bleed, the black armour connoting a sense of sternness as well as danger and masculinity) sparks curiosity in the audience viewing the poster. as the light of the backdrop shines on the side of the mans chest we see that there is a sign that indicates that he is part of a police force (referring to the actual name of the film) not only does this again exemplify the use of authority, but it also illuminates the idea of masculinity (as stereotypically we imagine most police officers to be male).

The strong sense of male gender is also exemplified by not just the armour but the word being intertextual for fighting as well as clothing for war) but we also see the armour shaped for the police officers supposed 'six-pack' indicating a sign of supreme health. by these signs it is clear that the poster is very much appealing to the male audience as its representation of the character (who is supposedly the hero of the film) is in armour ready for war, with a gun, a very distinguished weapon that is known for killing, not to mention that robots and police officers are stereotypically known to appeal to the classic boy' teenager).

The red light that beams of his helmet creates a sense of mystery and illusions as this highlights the facts to the audience that for the time being we do not know his true identity, again this can be seen as a hook for the viewer of the poster. To add the red connotes a sense of battle and danger, both are major films that can bee assumed will play a significant part from within the film.

As the film is targeted towards a young audience (yet not forgetting the large audience that was present when the original first came to silver screen in the 80's) a main hook for the poster is the statement of the film being planned to air in IMAX cinemas which again helps to not only intrigue the audience but to also excite them as they enjoy the film through a different perspective of media cinema broadcasting that is sure to suit the many action sequences of which the film is sure to provide.

DISTRIBUTION:

The Production Company: MGM:

MGM, standing for Metro Goldwyn-Mayer is an American media company, involved primarily in the production and distribution of films and television programs. Once the largest and most glamorous of film studios, MGM was founded in 1924 when the entertainment entrepreneur Marcus Loew gained control of Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures Corporation and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. Its headquarters are in Beverly Hills, California.

The studio's official motto, "Ars Gratia Artis", is a Latin phrase meaning "Art for art's sake"; it was chosen by Howard Dietz, the studio's chief publicist.[The studio's logo is a roaring lion surrounded by a ring of film inscribed with the studio's motto. The logo, which features Leo the Lion, was created by Dietz in 1916 for Goldwyn Pictures and updated in 1924 for MGM's use. Dietz based the logo on his alma mater's mascot—the Columbia University lion. Originally silent, the sound of Leo the Lion's roar was added to films for the first time in August 1928. In the 1930s and 1940s the studio billed itself as having "more stars than there are in heaven", a reference to the large number of A-list movie stars under contract to the company. This second motto was also coined by Deitz, and was probably first used in 1932.

MGM was the last studio to convert to sound pictures, but in spite of this fact, from the end of the silent film era through the late 1950s, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was the dominant motion picture studio in Hollywood.

plot

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years - and it's meant billions for OmniCorp's bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) - a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit - is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice. - Written bySony Pictures Entertainment
